Belonging, Wanting to Belong, Striving to Belong: Communities in ELT

This plenary presentation, like the PAC@FEELTA2012 conference itself, is a celebration of the various communities which intersect in our lives as foreign language teachers. We strive to build a learning community in each of our classrooms, to introduce our learners to the wider community of foreign language learners, and to enter and participate in the community of users of our particular foreign language. We ourselves, though we stand alone in the classroom, draw support from the community of our teachers’ room colleagues, our professional and academic contacts and our membership in professional associations; as language users, we are members of a community of target language speakers which manifests itself on the local, national and global level.

We will explore and celebrate each of these communities and the richness they bring to our personal and professional lives.
