Consciousness-Raising Tasks for Grammar Teaching

This workshop will begin by explaining the difference between two types of second language (L2) knowledge – implicit knowledge and explicit knowledge. It will then consider the role that explicit knowledge plays in both the use and the acquisition of an L2. One way of developing explicit knowledge pedagogically – through consciousness raising tasks – will be discussed in terms of both its advantages and its limitations. A framework for designing such tasks will be presented by examining ‘data’ and ‘implementation’ options. A number of studies that have investigated consciousness-raising tasks will be discussed. Students will also have the opportunity to do a number of grammar consciousness-raising tasks.
